Getting Ready for Spring and Summer: A Dance & Fitness Teacher’s Perspective

As the days begin to stretch a little longer and the first signs of spring appear, I always feel a shift in energy. After the darker winter months, the brighter mornings and lighter evenings bring a natural motivation to move more, breathe deeply, and reconnect with the outdoors. As a dance and fitness teacher, this time of year is one of my favourites—it’s when people begin to rediscover the joy of movement again.

Spring is the perfect reset. Not in a drastic “new year, new me” kind of way, but in a gentle, refreshing way that encourages us to take care of ourselves both physically and mentally.

Fresh Air, Fresh Energy

One of the simplest ways to start preparing your body and mind for the warmer months is by getting outside more often. Fresh air has an incredible way of lifting our mood and boosting our energy.

You don’t have to plan an intense workout to benefit. A brisk walk in the park, a gentle jog along a quiet path, or even stretching outside in the morning sunshine can make a huge difference. Moving outdoors wakes up the body and clears the mind in a way that indoor routines sometimes can’t.

Move Your Body in Ways You Enjoy

As a dance teacher, I always remind people that exercise doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Movement should feel good. Whether that’s dancing, yoga, Pilates, strength training, or simply walking, the key is finding something that brings you joy.

Spring is also a great time to try something new. Join a dance class, attend an outdoor fitness session, or explore a different style of movement. Often the hardest part is simply showing up for the first class—but once you’re there, the energy of the group makes it much easier.

Make Fitness Social

One of my favourite ways to stay consistent with exercise is to make it social. When movement becomes a chance to connect with others, it feels far less like a task and much more like something to look forward to.

Instead of meeting a friend only for coffee, why not combine it with a walk? A catch-up stroll through the park followed by a coffee is one of the simplest and most enjoyable ways to move more without even thinking about it.

You could also invite a friend to join you for a class. Trying a dance or fitness session together can be a great bonding experience—and it’s always reassuring to walk into a new class with someone you know. Plus, having a workout buddy makes it far more likely you’ll both keep coming back.

Nourish Your Body

As the seasons change, it’s also a great opportunity to refresh your eating habits. Warmer weather naturally draws us toward lighter, fresher foods.

Think colourful salads, seasonal fruits, simple home-cooked meals, and plenty of water. Healthy eating doesn’t need to be restrictive—it’s about fuelling your body so you have the energy to move, dance, and enjoy your day.

When you combine good nutrition with regular movement, the result is more energy, better sleep, and an overall sense of wellbeing.

Small Habits, Big Impact

Preparing for spring and summer doesn’t mean overhauling your entire lifestyle overnight. In fact, the most effective changes are usually the simplest ones.

Walk more often.
Spend time outside.
Try a class with a friend.
Eat fresh, nourishing foods.
Move your body in ways that make you smile.

These small habits build momentum, and before you know it, you’ll feel stronger, lighter, and more energised—ready to enjoy everything the warmer months have to offer.

From a dance and fitness teacher’s perspective, the goal is never perfection. It’s about creating a lifestyle where movement, connection, fresh air, and good food all play a natural part in your routine.
